Duo Tone Scarf

Learning how to crochet a scarf is a popular and satisfying craft project that can be done in as little as an afternoon. For beginners, there are a few basic stitches that will allow you to create a range of projects and looks combined with the size, color, and texture of the yarn. A common stitch is the half double crochet stitch, which is thicker than a double crochet stitch, but taller than a single crochet stitch. When you use the half double crochet stitch every row, you end up with a beautiful, yet dense fabric of yarn to make a warm and cozy scarf for the colder months! So let’s get into what we will need.

If you are new to crocheting, here is a breakdown of how to complete the Half Double Crochet Stitch:

  • Wrap the yarn around your hook. Then, insert your hook into the stitch you are working on. Grab the yarn again, and pull this through. It will look like you have three loops on your hook. Then grab the yarn again, and pull it through all three of those loops!

Materials:

  • Two different colors of worcested weight yarn (#4).
  • Crochet hook I (5.5mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Directions:

  1. Using your first color (A) chain (ch) 226.
  2. Half double crochet (HDC) into the third chain from the hook, and the rest of the row, ch 2
  3. HDC entire row. Repeat this for a total of 8 rows. Cut remaining yarn, with enough to weave in your ends later.
  4. Switch colors to (B), and continue to HDC across whole row for a total of 8 rows.
  5. Cut yarn and weave in all your ends

It’s really that easy! If you need a little more help, or if seeing the steps played out is easier, follow along with the video tutorial below:
