Here’s another fun knitting project that doesn’t take too much time to create, or much yarn! With one skein of chunky weight yarn I was able to knit two of these adorable ribbed cowls and give one as a gift recently! Chunky yarns make such warm and cozy cowls which is why I often try to use them for these kinds of patterns.
If you are a beginner at knitting, or are unsure of how to use circular needles, this project is great because we will be knitting two basic stitches in the round. As anyone could tell you, knowing how to knit and purl are fundamental stitches which you will use in most of the projects you choose to make. Knowing how to knit in the round is so helpful if you are trying to make something circular like a cowl, or a hat, because it allows you to skip the step of “sewing” the two ends together to create the circular effect.
So to get started with the Chunky Ribbed Cowl, you will need some materials:
- 1 skein of any chunky yarn (5)
- Size 13 circular needle
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
The pattern is simple and works up in no time:
- Cast on 84 stitches.
- Join the two ends together by ensuring none of the stitches are twisted on our circular needle (Optional: to give our cast on row a more unified look, you can swap the very first stitch with the very last stitch)
- *Knit 2 (K2) Purl 2 (P2)* repeat
- That’s it: K2, P2 until the cowl is about 11″ tall.
- Cast off using the same K2, P2 pattern
To be able to follow along with these steps, watch the video I made walking you through each of the steps!
