Crochet Ribbed Cowl

Today’s project is the Crochet Ribbed Cowl. This is a cute, simple yet small project that can easily be finished in an afternoon. The amount of yarn you’ll need is great because you won’t even need a full skein to create!

For those looking to advance their new crochet skills a little bit, this is a good project because it’s a half double crochet in the back loop only for each row, except the foundation row, which is just a regular half double crochet.

This pattern uses the half double crochet in the back loops only. This means, when you go to insert your hook into the stitch, you aren’t going into the whole top of the stitch. If you look at your foundation row from the top, the stitch has a “V” shape with the yarn. For the back loops only, we’ll only be inserting our crochet hook into half the V shape, going in from the middle and out the other side.

Materials needed:

  • 1 skein of any worsted weight yarn (4)
  • Crochet hook “I” (5.25mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Directions:

  1. Chain (ch) 35
  2. In the second ch from the hook, half double crochet (HDC), and then HDCs into each chain for this row, ch 1 and turn your work.
  3. In each stitch of this row, do a HDC into the back loops only (BLO), ending with a ch 1, and turning your work.
  4. Repeat the last step for a total of 48 rows.
  5. Make a small knot with your last loop, then cut a long tail. Using the tapestry needle, sew the two ends together for a continuous cowl.
  6. Weave in your ends.

And that is it! Follow along below as I go through each of these steps to show you how to create this cowl.
