Granny Square Blanket

Are you looking for a great yarn buster project as fall rolls in? Do you have lots of yarns, but not enough of any of one kind to make a full project? If you crochet, bringing all that scrap yarn into one big blanket is a great way to burn through your yarn stash (so you’ll have more space for the new ones!) quickly. For consistency, I recommend using the same size yarns. This way, you’ll be sticking with the same crochet hook, and if you have to pick a new yarn in the middle of a row, the whole row stays the same.

This project is also fun if you are learning how to make a granny square and might be looking for some extra practice. If you are new to granny squares, below I go through how to get yours started, and there is a video at the end where I go through each step with you!

Materials Needed:

  • Any yarn you have lots of (I will be using worsted weight yarn – 4)
  • The recommended hook size for your yarn (I will be using an “I” hook – 5.5mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Directions:

  1. We are starting out with a magic circle. To do this, make a slip knot towards the end of your yarn, and chain 4.
  2. Slip stitch (sl st) into the first chain to create a loop of chains, then chain (ch) 3.
  3. Working into the middle of the chain circle make two double crochet (dc), ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, and 3 dc. Connect with a sl st at the top of the 3 chains, then chain 3 more.
    • This should now resemble a square because the chain 1 spaces help give the pattern its square shape.
  4. DC 2 into the ch 1 space next to the ch 3 to create 3 double crochets, ch 1, then 3 dc into the same space. 3 dc into the next ch 1 space, dc 3 into the same space. 3 dc into the next ch 1 space, dc 3 into the same space. 3 dc into the next ch 1 space, dc 3 into the same space, and then ch 3.
  5. DC 2 where the ch 3 is, dc 3 into the corner ch 1 space, dc 3 into that same space. 3 dc into the space between two of the “3 dc” sections.
