Moss Stitch Hat

Looking for a fun and easy crochet project? Why not try making a cozy moss stitch hat! The moss stitch creates a beautiful texture that is perfect for keeping your head warm during the colder months.

Here’s a list of the materials you’ll need:

  • Super chunky yarn in the color of your choice
  • Crochet hook N
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

To make this hat for yourself:

  1. Chain (ch) 8.
  2. Working into the back loops of your chain, do a half double crochet (HDC) into the 3rd chain from the hook, ch 2
  3. HDC into the back loops only of every stitch in the row, until the last stitch then do a HDC through both loops. Ch 2
  4. Repeat last step until you have 24 rows.
  5. Bring the first and last rows together and single crochet (sc) the two rows together, ending with a ch 1.
  6. We’re going to start the moss stitch at this point, working into the sides of the ribbed brim. SC into the side of brim, ch 1, SC into next stitch space. It helps to SC into the end of each HDC row at its fullest part, and the ch 1 space over the tall part of the HDC. Continue across whole row, ending with a slip stitch (sl st) to join the row, ch 1.
  7. SC into ch 1 space from previous row, ch 1 and repeat across entire row, doing all the sc into the ch 1 spaces from the previous row. Sl st to join round and ch 1.
  8. Repeat for 10 rows (or 12 if you would like a slouchy hat or to be able to fold the brim up).
  9. Counting each *SC, ch1* as 1 stitch, there should be 24 stitches across your row. For the decrease we’ll be decreasing our row by 4 stitches each round. SC, ch 1 four times, then on the fifth stitch do a decrease (insert hook into next ch 1 space and pull up yarn as if to do a sc, then insert hook into next ch 1 space and pull yarn up. You’ll have 3 loops on your hook in two different stitch spaces. Yarn over and pull yarn through all three loops, ch 1). Repeat three more times, ending with a sl st and ch 1.
  10. Repeat that step four more times, decreasing the number you count to by one each new row (3 moss stitches, then decrease…) ending with the final row being all decreases.
  11. Cut remaining yarn and pull through final loop to close stitches. Use the tapestry needle to weave in ends.

And there you have it, a beautiful moss stitch hat to keep you warm and stylish! Happy crocheting!
