To get started, make sure you have the following materials on hand:

  • Worsted weight yarn in your favorite color
  • Size 8 double pointed knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Now, let’s dive into the steps for creating your own Seed Stitch Hat:

  1. Cast On: First, cast on a total of 80 stitches, evenly spread over 4 double pointed needles using the long-tail cast-on method. This will create a sturdy and neat edge for your hat.
  2. Seed Stitch Pattern: The seed stitch pattern is a combination of knitting and purling stitches in an alternating sequence. So to get started, with your yarn in the back, knit (K) 1, then bring your yarn to the front and purl (P) 1. Repeat these two steps K1, P1 across all four needles on all ODD rows. The EVEN rows will be the opposite, P1, K1. (I will demonstrate how to achieve the seed stitch pattern, which creates a beautifully textured fabric for your hat in the video at the end of this page)
  3. Ribbing and Body: We will start with a ribbing pattern for the base of our hat, by following a K2, P2 pattern across the entire row for 12 rows.
    • Row 13: K1, P1 across entire row as well as all odd number rows.
    • Row 14 and all even numbered rows will be the opposite, following a P1, K1 pattern. Until we start shaping the crown.
  4. Crown Decreases: As you continue knitting the body of the hat, I will show you how to execute the crown decreases to shape the top of the hat. This will give your hat a snug and polished finish. The nice thing about shaping the crown is each row will not be the same for the rest of the hat.
    • Knit 2 together (K2tog), K1, P1 until two stitches remain on the needle, then purl 2 together (P2tog). Repeat this step across all four needles.
    • Continue following this step until there are 8 stitches remaining across all needles.
  5. Finishing Touches: Finally, I will walk you through the steps for binding off your stitches, sewing any remaining seams, and weaving in the yarn ends.
    • Cut your yarn leaving at least 6″ of a tail for weaving in ends. Using your tapestry needle, weave the tail end through the remaining 8 stitches. Put the tapestry needle through the middle of the hole at the top, and flip your hat inside out. Pull the yarn tight to close the top shut, tie a knot here and start weaving in your ends. Be sure not to go too many stitches in one direction so your yarn doesn’t come undone while wearing it!

These finishing touches will complete your seed stitch hat and make it ready to wear. Happy knitting! Stay tuned for more projects and knitting adventures!
