Moss Stitch Cowl

In light of the holiday season, I wanted to post a video that used material which would make a project work up fast. This project uses the moss stitch in crochet, which isn’t the quickest stitch, but the overall look is a favorite of mine. This cowl is wide allowing for some drippiness around the neck of whoever wears it. The overall length is about 2′ long (and stitched together for a continuous pattern), so it will only go around the neck once.

So let’s get into what we’ll need to get this project going:

  • Super chunky yarn (size 6)
  • Crochet hook “M”
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

The pattern is one row that repeats itself right up to the end. The foundation row is similar, but will look a little different so it gets the pattern going.

  1. Chain (ch) 30
  2. Single crochet (sc) into the 2nd chain from the hook, ch 1. Skip the next ch, sc into the ch after, ch 1. Continue with the sc, ch 1, skipping a chain between each single crochet for the remainder of the row. End with a ch 1
  3. The next row will still be *sc, ch1* repeat, but we will do our single crochets into the ch 1 spaces from the previous row. End with a sc in the turning chain from the previous row, and ch 1
  4. Repeat step 3 until the entire length is about 2′. (I used skeins that were 106 yds and used up two full skeins to make this).
  5. To stitch the two ends together, bring the ends together with the last row underneath the first row. Pull the last loop into the first stitch (from first row), and repeat row 3 through both rows to stitch them together. The stitches should go through the ch 1 space from both rows equally.

It’s a pretty simple pattern that works up pretty quickly, it took me a few hours to create this whole thing myself, so it would be a perfect gift, or gifts, if you need to make a few before the holidays are over!
