Back to School Hat

The cooler weather is here, and so are classes! To start of the new year, I came up with a simple crochet hat pattern that works up quickly, while also showing off some school pride by adding your school colors.

This is an easy, straightforward pattern that does not require any crowning or decreases. Instead, we’ll be working our hat in a ribbed pattern that will look like a rectangle until we tie the top together for the typical hat look. For fun, I also added a pom pom to the top to make it look more festive, and because the top of the hat will look bulkier than other hat patterns.

The great thing about this pattern is that it doesn’t use up a lot of yarn, meaning you can use scrap yarn to make this project, or you can make up a few hats with the same colors. The color changing process is also easier here, because of the way we’ll bring the hat together, the switching of colors doesn’t have to be pretty (hence, the pom pom).

The materials needed for this project are pretty usual:

  • Worcested weight yarn in the colors you need
  • Crochet hook “I”
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

The pattern below will be written out for reference, and at the end of the page is a video that shows each step of that is easier to follow.

  1. Starting with Color A, chain 48.
  2. In the 3rd chain (ch) from the hook, do a half double crochet (hdc). HDC into rest of chain, then ch 2 and turn work.
  3. HDC into the back loops only along the entire row. This creates the crocheted rib. Ch 2 and turn work
  4. HDC into back loops only for every row until the end. Following a repeating pattern for the colors:
    • Color A – 4 rows
    • Color B – 2 rows
  5. Repeat the 6 row pattern 6 times, then 4 rows of Color A, and 1 row of Color B (7 sections of A, and 6 1/2 of B).
  6. Fold hat in half so your first and last rows line up. Single crochet (sc) these two rows together to make the rectangle a cylinder using Color B.
  7. Cut the yarn, leaving enough to sew the top shut and weave in your end.
  8. Using a tapestry needle, weave the yarn through using a star pattern to close the top of the cylinder closed to create the top of the hat. Tie the end close to the hat when you feel it is closed enough.
  9. To create the pom pom, I followed these steps:
    • Wrap both colors of yarn around 3 of your fingers, leaving space between each finger, and leave a long tail at the beginning. Wrap as much yarn as you’d like, the more yarn, the puffier the pom pom.
    • Using the long tail from the start, wrap that around the yarn as tight as you can and tie it off.
    • Cut the two rounded ends of the pom, fluff the Pom pom and cut any stray ends to create an even circle.
    • With the tied end, attach it to the tapestry needle and insert it into the top of your hat. Tie the pom pom tail to the tail of the hat and weave in all your ends.

I hope you all enjoy your new hats!
