When looking for different projects you can complete in the summer, why not look for a pattern that will be useful during summer as well? This is an easy pattern that uses two different crochet stitches to complete this look. If you are new to crochet, this is a fun pattern that won’t take too long to crochet that will look more complex than it is.
This beach tote is large enough to fit a couple beach towels and either some swim suits or dry clothes. You can complete this project in a few hours if you are comfortable crocheting and already know the different stitches, but you could still make this pattern up within a couple days if you are less familiar.
For this tote I chose to do three different colors, with the two on the ends being different from each other. If you choose to make yours a little differently, know I used the little cotton yarn skeins to make these. I used half of the pink yarn, most of the green, and all of the beige. If you choose to switch up the color patterns, this may affect how much yarn you will need!
Speaking of, let’s get into what we’ll need for this project.
- 4 skeins of cotton yarn (depending on your color choices)
- Crochet hook “H”
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Follow along below for the written steps, and if you would like to see each of the steps there is a video at the bottom of the page!
- Using your first color, chain (ch) 74. Join the chain together with a slip stitch (sl st) making sure that your chain is laying flat first with no twists in it. Chain 2
- Half double crochet (hdc) in 37 stitches, then 2 hdc into the same stitch. Repeat across the 2nd half of the row, ending with a hdc into the initial ch space. Always end with a sl st and ch 2.
- Repeat step 2 five more times for a total of 6 rows.
- On the last row, switch colors and ch 4. Skip the next st and double crochet (dc) into the second stitch from the chain. Ch 1, and dc into the same stitch. This will look like a “V” when you’re done.
- Skip the next two stitches and do another “V” stitch (dc, ch1, dc). Continue this pattern for the rest of the row.
- Repeat step 5 eighteen more times for a total of 19 rows (if you are using a ball that is 95 yards long this should use up the entire 2 skeins).
- Switch to final color and ch 2. HDC across entire row (tops of dc and ch1). Sl st to join row, and ch 2
- Repeat step 7, four more times for a total of 5 hdc rows.
- For the single strap, sl st back 4 stitches from the beginning of row, ch 2 then hdc across those 4 slipped stitches, and across the next 4 stitches for a total of 8 hdc. Ch 2
- HDC across new row (9 total stitches), ch 2.
- Repeat row 10 until you have 57 rows.
- Cut yarn, leaving enough yarn to weave the end of the strap to the other side, and weave in the ends using the tapestry needle.
- Going back to the bottom (and first color), flip the whole work inside out. Folding the work in half (so it looks similar to when we were increasing), insert hook into the first two stitches that lay side by side.
- Single crochet (sc) into each pair of stitches across to join the ends together for a closed bottom. This should give the tote bag more stability.
- Weave in all your ends and enjoy!
