Circular Coasters

Hello summer projects! As the colder weather starts to warm up, and I put away my cozier projects, I’m not ready to put away my crochet hook or knitting needles. Now is the perfect time to spend time working on some smaller projects I put off to the side.

Here we have the circular coaster, something that works up pretty quickly and looks great at the end. I made my four coasters in just over an hour, so making a few sets like these in all sorts of colors will make for some cute gifts when it gets back around to that time. While you could do a single color, in the video I present two different colors to give my set a little more “pop”.

For these coasters we’re going to be using cotton yarn instead of the typical wool or acrylic yarn types. This is important especially if they are going to sit under hot items, where the other yarn types could warp or even melt. They also provide a sturdier base for putting any kind of drink on, where the acrylic yarns could be fluffier.

So to get started we’ll need just a few basic materials

  • 1 skein of cotton yarn
  • Crochet Hook “I”
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Follow along here for the written instructions, and if you would like to view them step by step, there is a video at the end of this post.

  1. Chain (ch) 4, joining the first and last chain in a slip stitch (sl st). This is called a magic circle. Chain 1
  2. Into the center of the circle single crochet (sc) 11 more times for a total of 12 stitches. Join to the first ch 1 stitch to end the first row. Ch 1 (11 stitches)
  3. Do 2 sc into each sc from the previous row. Join in a sl st with the ch1. Ch 1 again. (22 stitches)
  4. Repeat previous row (44 stitches)
  5. Sc across whole row, joining in a sl st. Ch 1 (44 stitches)
  6. Repeat previous row (44 stitches)
  7. Cut yarn and tie in ends.
