One Hour Crochet Hat

There are numerous reasons to search for a one hour crochet project. From absolute beginners, to those looking for quick gift ideas, this one hour crochet hat is a great project for anytime.

If you are just starting out, you can find the written pattern below, and at the end I have a video of each step to help you see how the hat is made. For the purposes of the video I took extra time to show you each step of the hat making process, hopefully it helps clear up any confusion!

This hat is created as a big rectangle that we weave together at the end to create the “hat” look, which makes it perfect for those just beginning to crochet, who may have some trouble with the crown decreases found in most patterns. We’ll be using a larger size yarn and crochet hook to build our pattern up faster. This is also a great option for those getting used to the process so you can see each stitch being formed, and be able to see clearly where to insert the hook.

So for this project we’ll need just a few items:

  • Super chunky weight yarn (#6)
  • Crochet hook N (15mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

The pattern will be short as it’s one row repeated over and over until the hat is complete.

  1. Chain 26
  2. Half Double Crochet (HDC) into the back loops of the chain, starting with the 3rd chain from the hook. Chain 2 and turn work
  3. HDC into the back loops of previous row, until last stitch. HDC normally, chain 2 and turn work.
  4. Continue step #3 until you have 24 rows.
  5. Fold piece in half with the first and last rows meeting at the top. Pull the crochet hook out of loop (currently on hook), then reinsert hook into the stitch from the initial row that lines up with loose loop. With the hook, grab the loop and pull it through both sides.
  6. Single Crochet (sc) into both rows, initial and last, so you are crocheting them together, creating a continuous circle.
  7. Tie off long tail, and insert the tail into the tapestry needle.
  8. Looking at the hat from the side (so the circle is facing you), create a star shape with the yarn in order to close the end. This will create the top of the hat!
  9. Fold the open end of the hat up to form the brim, and you are all done.
