Half Rib Crochet Hat

The Half Rib Crochet Hat is a cute crochet hat that pairs with the Half Rib Crochet Scarf we created together last week. If you thought the scarf version was a quick crochet project, you’ll love this hat too!

For those of you new crochet, or looking for new ideas, the Half Ribbed Crochet projects are great for learning.

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • “I” Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Directions:

  1. Chain 7
  2. Row 1: Half double crochet (HDC) starting with the second chain from the hook, then HDC in rest of row. Chain 2
  3. Row 2: HDC in each stitch into the back loops only. The last stitch will be a regular HDC through both loops. Chain 2.
  4. Continue row 2 for another 45 rows
  5. Single crochet (SC) the first and last row together to create the circular brim for our hat. Chain 1.
  6. Row 1: SC along the side of the previous HDC rows. You should end up with 64 stitches on our new circular row. Slip stitch into the previous chain 1, and chain 1 more to start the new row.
  7. Row 2:SC another row just as before, ending with a slip stitch, then a chain 1
  8. Row 3:SC into the back loops only for the third row, ending with a slip stitch and a chain 1
  9. Repeat Row 2 x2, and Row 3 x1 until hat measures 5.5″ from the bottom (of the brim) to the top.
  10. Now we need to start the crown of the hat through stitch decreasing.
  11. SC 14, then SC two together (SC2tog). Repeat until the end of the row.
  12. Repeat the decreasing row, single crocheting one less stitch with each new row (SC 13, SC2tog / SC 12, SC2tog / etc…)
  13. Keep the pattern of 2 single crochet rows, then 1 back loops only single crochet rows while continuing the decreasing rows.
  14. End by SC2tog across entire row.
  15. Cut yarn from rest of skein, thread tail end through the tapestry needle, and thread through opposite side of the opening at the top.
  16. Flip hat inside-out and begin weaving end into the inside of the hat.
