Boyfriend Hat

Boyfriend Hat

Learn how to create this simple crochet hat! If you liked the Boyfriend Scarf we created about a month ago, you will like this hat version to go along with it. This crochet hat only involves three types of stitches, and once you get the hang of the pattern, you could have a brand new hat in a matter of hours.

Going with the same colors as the scarf version, the Boyfriend Hat involves tweed yarns only. As we get further and further into fall, these tweed colors look better and better in my opinion. Of course, any color can be used, but I love the diversity the tweed gives to the yarn and pattern.

So without further interruptions, let’s get right to how to make this crochet hat!

What you’ll need:

  • Any worsted weight yarn
  • I Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestery

Key:

  • SC – single crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
  • dc2tog – double crochet 2 together

Ok, so the key makes it look more complicated than it really is, I promise. We are going to start at the brim, and work our way to the top of the hat.

The pattern:

  1. Chain 8
  2. HDC into the back loops of the chain only, starting with the second from the hook (7 stitches)
  3. HDC into back loops of stitches, until the last stitch, then HDC into whole stitch. Repeat this row 33 more times for a total of 34 rows.
  4. Join the two ends of the brim together, and single crochet into each set of stitches (of first and last row) so the brim is now sideways and a circle.
  5. Chain 1, then SC into sides of HDC rows the whole way around. You should end up with 45 stitches including the chain 1.
  6. Chain 3, then DC the whole way around
  7. Repeat steps 5 + 6 twice more
  8. Chain 1. *SC 7, sc2tog* repeat 4 more times (40 stitches)
  9. Chain 3. *DC 6, dc2tog* repeat 4 more times (35 stitches)
  10. Chain 1. *SC 5, sc2tog* repeat 4 more times (30 stitches)
  11. Chain 3. *DC 4, dc2tog* repeat 4 more times (25 stitches)
  12. Chain 1. sc2tog across whole row, sc1 (13 stitches)
  13. Chain 3. dc2tog across whole row, dc1 (7 stiches)
  14. Chain 1. sc2tog across whole row, sc1 (4 stiches)
  15. Tie off end. Using a tapestry needle, sew last stitch to one on the opposite side to close the hole at the top.
  16. Flip hat inside out to weave in ends
