One of my favorite knits to design and create are hats! There’s just so many different things you can do to make each hat different than the others. A solid colored hat is shown in the video, but here I am specifically talking about how to create the striped look for the majority of the hat.
Here, I am creating the Striped Knit Hat. Follow along below as I show you each step to this adorable hat. For the written pattern, and information about the materials I used to make this hat, continue reading.
Materials needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (#4).
- I used Lion Brand’s Vanna White Yarn in Charcoal Grey, and Mustard. (Burgandy was the third color I ended up not using)
- 5 Size 8 double pointed needles (DPN)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Key:
- K – knit
- P – Purl
- CO – cast on
- MC – main color
- CC – contrasting color
- k2tog – knit two together
- k2tog bl – knit two together through back of loops
To create this hat,
- CO 80 stitches in MC, putting 20 stitches on each of the 4 needles.
- Join the cast on by switching the first stitch with the very last stitch (shown below)
- K2, P2 each row until piece measures 2″ – 2.5″ depending on your personal preference.
- Switch to CC, and K across whole row for 2 rows
- Switch to MC, and K across whole row for 2 rows
- Continue switching between two colors every 2 rows until entire piece measures 5.5″
- In CC, K2tog bl, K16, K2tog x 4 needles
- In MC, K2tog bl, K14, K2tog x 4 needles
- Continue rest of decreases in MC
- K2tog bl, K12, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog bl, K10, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog bl, K8, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog bl, K6, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog bl, K4, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog bl, K2, K2tog x 4 needles
- K2tog, K2tog x 4 needles
- Cut yarn with enough of a tail to weave in after
- Using tapestry needle, string yarn through each of the remaining stitches, and cinch closed
- Put the tapestry needle through small hole in top of hat and flip hat inside out to weave ends in on the wrong side.
